Module 6: AI Policies and Laws
Policy and Law Worldwide
The EU recently passed wide-ranging laws on AI and they are now being tested. We will start with the EU laws and policies.
Assignment 1
We will start by reading all about the AI act from the official EU website
- This EU webpage describes the AI act generally
- You should do LOTS of exploring from that page but here are some relevant links to be sure to read:
Optional extra readings
- MIT Technology review has a quick summary titled “The AI Act is done. Here’s what will (and won’t) change”
- They also link to a summary “Five things you need to know about the EU’s new AI Act“
- The Future of Life institute is also running a webpage focused on the AI act
Case Study
- Find a case where the new EU laws are applying and being challenged (there are multiple of these right now, any new law gets hit with this). Submit these and be prepared to discuss them.
Assignment 2
For our second assignment looking at world policies on AI, some of the organizations of multiple governments (UN and G7) have put together statements on the use of AI:
- Read about the new UN Resolution on AI
- This is the official link for the resolution itself (you get to choose your language from this link)
- G7 AI governance framework
Let’s look beyond the EU and UN at other countries with international AI policies
- Read about India’s AI policy. The beginning of the document (really the first 2/3!) gives all the reasons behind why they need an AI policy. The full document is not too long and should be a quick and enjoyable read
- Read about Singapore’s approach to AI regulation. The full framework is linked from that page (which just explains it a bit). As with the India policy, although the pdf is long, it is a quick read based on your knowledge at this point in class. You can focus especially on the case studies of how the principles and regulation are being applied.
Case Study
- Find a case outside the US and not one of the countries listed above where the country (or you can find another larger entity, like NATO) and find their current status of AI policies or guidance. Submit a short (1-3 slides) summary of what you learned to share.
- UNESCO has a global hub focused on AI worldwide that might be helpful here
