Module 5: Algorithmic Ethics: Fairness
What is fair and how do we encode it?
What does it mean for things to be fair? We humans feel inherently that things are fair or unfair but one person’s definition of fair isn’t always the same as another person’s definition. In today’s discussion, we will read two viewpoints on fairness.
Assignment 1
The first assignment comes from The Ethical Algorithm. You have two choices for this:
- Chapter 2: Algorithmic Fairness – From Parity to Pareto.
- Watch the video of the two main authors discussing the book in detail here.
Since everyone is reading this, your submissions this time should be only discussion questions.
Assignment 2
The second reading for today is going to be a more of a choose-your-own-adventure. I pre-picked one paper but you could also choose a paper from the following conferences from any of the last few years. Each group will need to present a short summary of their paper and a few discussion questions.
- “Measurement and Fairness“
- Look at the past few years of the “ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency” and choose a paper that is of interest to you focused on fairness. Read it and prepare a summary for class.
- Look at the past few years of the “AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society” and find a paper on fairness that looks interesting to you. Read and prepare a summary for class.
